Zsombor Barakonyi
Hungarian and STRABAG award winning painter, Zsombor Barakonyi usually starts by focusing on everyday reality, creating atmospheric representations of well-known and lesser-known city scenes. Initially, Barakonyi painted using traditional methods like acrylic and oil on canvas at the University of Fine Arts.
However, the 2005 installation 'Boards and Boats' marked a significant turning point in his artistic career. This exhibition showcased his use of unconventional materials such as skateboards and wooden boats. He became drawn to working with wood as it is less sensitive and doesn't need to be handled delicately.
In his creative process, Barakonyi applies a unique technique involving a series of steps. He begins by attaching a map pin to a foil with a map, then he draws shapes onto the foil. After cutting out these shapes with a blade, he applies them to the wood surface using rolled acrylic paint and spray. His method resembles the manual focus function of a camera - it was not for nothing that Zsombor's 2011 exhibition at acb Galéria together with the painter Zbynek Sedlecky was titled Manual Focus. The creator applies the image to the wood layer by layer, thereby highlighting and amplifying some parts, while leaving others in the dark. Zsombor directs the audience's attention just like a film director.
And in recent years, light has taken on an increasingly prominent role for him, which is the defining motif of his works."
