József Szurcsik
"In my works, I address the fundamental problems of humanity. I am particularly interested in the individual's relationship with their environment, society, power, and the related issues. My works are figurative. I intentionally simplify the themes, telling the story through faces, so that the topic at hand is clearly readable at a certain level, while also allowing for multiple interpretations due to the complexity or absurdity of the problem and its seemingly impossible solution." (József Szurcsik)
He grew up in an artistic family; his father, János Szurcsik, was a painter, and his mother, Anna Sárkány, was a painter and tapestry artist. His son, József, inherited their talent. An important factor in his artistic career was the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied printmaking from 1980 to 1985. He then attended the advanced postgraduate master’s course there from 1985 to 1988 and received the Derkovits Scholarship.
In 1986, he created the cover art for the publication Hangár, where his later trademark, the profile of a male head, first appeared.
He is a very versatile artist, creating lithographs, screen prints, etchings, and working in all branches of printmaking. He paints large pastel works, acrylic-oil paintings in a unique technique, and produces pencil and ink drawings. He creates small sculptures, painted tool sculptures, and experiments with three-dimensional possibilities, using plastic, colorful paper installations. His notable works also include set designs and book illustrations. Among other works, he designed the cover for Miklós Vámos' successful book "Book of Fathers".
